03/03/2007 - Phuket, Thailand (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - For the second straight day, Richard Sterne fired a course record tying eight-under 64 Saturday to grab a one- stroke lead after three rounds of the Johnnie Walker Classic.
Sterne completed 54 holes at 13-under-par 203. He is one clear of second-round leader Oliver Wilson, who stands at minus-12 after a third-round 70.
South African Anton Haig carded a two-under 70 Saturday and is alone in third at 11-under-par 205, while Richard Lee is two strokes further back after a 70 of his own.
Retief Goosen, the 2002 champion, moved into a share of the lead after three straight birdies from the second, but followed that with three consecutive bogeys. The South African went on to shoot even-par 72 after a closing bogey. He dropped from a share of third to fifth at eight-under-par 208.
Sterne, who along with Haig matched Greg Norman's course record of 64 on Friday, opened round three tied for 11th. Sterne started with three pars before posting his first birdie at the fourth.
The 25 year old made it two straight as he birdied the par-four fifth. Sterne birdied the par-five sixth to make it three in a row and get to minus-eight.
Sterne birdied the ninth at Blue Canyon Country Club for the second day in a row. He got to 10-under with a birdie on 12. Sterne moved within one of the lead as he birdied 15 and 16, each for the third day in a row.
For the second time on the day, Sterne made it three straight birdies as he birdied the par-three 17th to move to minus-13. That gave him a share of the lead. Sterne parred the last to close his second straight bogey-free round.
"This year my goal is to get into the top 50 in the world and hopefully get to the United States," said Sterne of his goals for this year. "I've never played there professionally. I need to learn how to win, especially in tough fields."
Sterne admitted afterwards that he had checked out of his hotel on Friday before his first 64 helped him make the cut.
"I checked out of my hotel and took my bags to the course," Sterne admitted. "I had a flight home at 8:00 p.m. that I fully expected to be on. Luckily I played well to shoot 64 and was able to check back into the same hotel."
Early on, Wilson and Haig shared the lead at minus-10 after Haig birdied the first. However, Haig bogeyed the second to fall from the lead.
Wilson birdied the third, but was joined in the lead by Goosen, who had run off three straight birdies from the second. Goosen fell off the pace as he bogeyed the following three holes.
The 26-year-old Wilson birdied five and six to move three clear of Haig at 13- under. From there, Wilson parred his next 10 holes. Sterne, playing eight groups ahead of the leader, caught Wilson during his par run.
Wilson stumbled to a bogey on 17 to slip back to minus-12 and a par at the last meant he finished the round one shot behind Sterne.
"It was a shame about the 17th, but I just can't see the shot in there," said Wilson, whose tee ball at the par three came up short, right of the green. "I tried to cut in a four iron, but it came out a bit thin. I did lose a bit of concentration, but managed to regroup and had a solid par at the last."
Wen-Chong Liang and Aron Price each posted rounds of five-under 67 to move from a share of 32nd into a tie for sixth at seven-under-par 209. They were joined there by eight-time Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie (70), Graeme Storm (70) and Ter-Chang Wang (71).
Ernie Els and Phillip Archer each shot 67 to jump from a share of 51st into a share of 11th at minus-six. Also vaulting to minus-six was Simon Hurd, who fired a 66 to climb 50 places in the standings. Those three were joined at six-under-par 210 by Richard Bland, Stephen Gallacher, James Nitties and Jeev Milkha Singh.

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
Barry Bonds Watch: Giants Slugger Says He'll Be Back
With only 21 home runs standing between him and Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds is indeed planning on coming back for more in 2007. At least, that's what his agent told the Los Angeles Times.
"Barry's going to play in 2007," Jeff Borris of Beverly Hills Sports Council told the Times on Tuesday. "I've had many discussions with Barry and he's going to play. My intentions are to see to it he's in a big-league uniform next season. Those are my marching orders."
